Meet the Faculty - Madeline Nyblade
Madeline Nyblade joined SUNY ESF as part of a cluster hire in Indigenous Environmental Science in the Environmental Studies Department, bringing together her background in geology, hydrology, and climate science with community-based research. As a faculty member in the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment, she teaches courses like Intro to Native Peoples, Lands, and Cultures and graduate-level community-based participatory research, helping students build skills for working ethically and collaboratively with Indigenous nations.
Her research focuses on Indigenous sovereignty, water quality, culturally important plants, climate change, and land stewardship, partnering with nations across New York State on projects ranging from plant protection and climate modeling to watershed research and land access. This conversation offers a glimpse into how ESF integrates Indigenous environmental knowledge, climate science, and authentic community partnerships — preparing students to support environmental care and Indigenous-led priorities in meaningful, actionable ways.
