ESF Professor Emeritus David Newman Inducted into SUNY Distinguished Academy
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sept. 21, 2026 – David Newman, Ph.D., professor emeritus at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), was honored as a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor during the recent SUNY Distinguished Academy Induction Ceremony.
The designation is among the highest honors conferred by the State University of New York and recognizes faculty members whose service has had a lasting impact on their institutions, professions, and communities.
Newman was recognized for his longstanding commitment to ESF and the SUNY system, as well as his leadership within the forestry profession. During his career, he contributed extensively to college governance, faculty leadership, student success initiatives, and professional organizations dedicated to advancing natural resource management and environmental stewardship.
“Dr. Newman has demonstrated a distinguished reputation for service not only to ESF and SUNY, but also to the local, national, and international communities,” said ESF President Joanie Mahoney. “David has been an exceptional professor at ESF and is a respected researcher in resource economics and policy. We are proud to recognize Dr. Newman with this well-deserved honor.”
“This honor reflects the extraordinary commitment David Newman has shown to ESF, SUNY, and the field of forestry over many decades,” said Dr. Lindi Quackenbush, provost and vice president for research. “David's service, leadership, and mentorship have strengthened our college in countless ways, from supporting students and faculty to advancing the profession he cares so deeply about. We are grateful for his many contributions and proud to see him recognized with this well-deserved distinction.”
The ceremony brought together SUNY's newest Distinguished Faculty members, celebrating exceptional accomplishments in service, teaching, librarianship, and scholarship. As a member of the Academy, Newman joins a select group of faculty whose careers exemplify excellence and whose contributions have strengthened SUNY's mission of education, research, and public service.
