Verostek Awarded Grant to Digitize, Create Metadata for Photos
Jane Verostek, associate librarian at Moon Library and overseer of the ESF Archives & Special Collections, has been awarded a $5,000 Central New York Library Resources Council Access and Digitization grant for 2021.
This award will be used to digitize and create metadata for 1,000 of the 6,500+ photographs that the ESF Archives & Special Collections houses from the Roosevelt Wild Life Station (RWLS). The historic photographs were taken by RWLS researchers and a selection of them were published with their research activities and findings in the Roosevelt Wild Life Station Bulletins (1921 to 1950) and the Roosevelt Wild Life Station Annals (1936-1936).
The photographs and corresponding handwritten notes from the RWLS researchers being digitized are exceptional primary resources that recorded many aspects of New York including natural landscapes, wildlife, structures/buildings/bridges and research activities from 1919 to the 1950s. As they are digitized the collection will be available online at the ESF New York Heritage Collections website/repository which also houses other prominent digitized collections from the ESF Archives & Special Collections.
