EXPLANATION OF 79FLOORS.WK1

Columns D through K are direct measurements, others are calculated

D - Gross air dry mass < 2mm, g soil/1000cm2
E - Tare for D, 13.22g except where large sample was in 2 bags so tare is 26.44
F - Measured net air dry mass of mineral material > 2 mm, g/1000cm2
G - Measured net air dry mass of organic material > 2 mm, g/1000cm2
H - Water fraction of air dry < 2 mm mass
I - Total horizon thickness, average of 10 points, mm
J - Organic fraction of < 2 mm material, g organic / g soil
K - Total N in < 2 mm, mg N / g soil. Value is for a pooled sample from
paired lines: L1+L2, L3+L4, L5+L6. Value is applied to both lines.

M - Net air dry mass < 2 mm, g/1000cm2, D - E
N - Net oven dry mass < 2 mm, g soil/1000cm2, M / ( 1 + H )
O - Oven dry mass of soil < 2 mm per unit area,(N g/1000cm2)*100(g/cm2)/(kg/ha)
P - Organic mass per unit area, J * O
Q - <2mm volume, cm3, I * (1000cm2/10 mm/cm) - F/2.65 - G/0.7
R - bulk density, g/cm3, N / Q
S - total nitrogen, kg/ha, K / O

U - <2mm forest floor mass per unit area, kg/ha, O
V - <2mm forest floor organic mass per unit area, kgom/ha, P
W - <2mm forest floor nitrogen per unit area, kgN/ha, S

Y - Total forest floor thickness, mm, I
Z - Forest floor bulk density as <2mm mass / total thickness, 0.1 * U / Y
AA - Forest floor organic fraction, V / U
AB - Forest floor N fraction of om, gN/kgom, W / V

AD - Mean and st.error forest floor thickness, mm, mean and sd of Y
AE - Mean and st.error forest floor bulk density, g/cm2, mean and sd of Z
AF - Mean and st.error forest floor organic fraction, mean and sd of AA
AG - Mean and st.error forest floor N/om, mean and sd of AB

Note: the bulk density reported in Federer (1984) is for <2mm mass / total
thickness; this is columns Z and AF above. The thickness in Y should have
been replaced by column Q / 1000 cm2, which is the thickness in cm as
corrected for >2mm volume.

AI - <2mm forest floor thickness, mm, Q / 100
AJ - Ratio of <2mm thickness to total thickness

The error in forest floor thickness by ignoring the >2mm correction is only
1 or 2% for all lines, so the difference is essentially negligible. This
finding ought to be reported.

Note: For H6L1 the <2mm total mass was incorrectly summed over horizons, so
previous values of bulk density and organic fraction for that line were also
incorrect.

EXPLANATION OF 80FLOORS.WK1

Similar to 79FLOORS.WK1 except
1) no separation of horizons, so columns have been shifted some,
2) coarse fragments are > 1 cm instead of > 2 mm
3) volume correction for coarse fragments uses particle density of 1.0 g/cm2
for all > 2 cm material because it was not separated into organic and mineral
As above, this correction is <2% (not shown in spreadsheet).
4) there is no thickness data for two plots
5) there are 5 lines instead of 6 for all but one plot

The nitrogen content for C3 L2 has been changed; a copying mistake.

Note: The published standard error on the thickness was for n = 50 or 60
individual sample points. Here it is for n = 5 or 6 using the mean thickness
for each line.
